Not Nice - Chris Garneau

This one sounds best late at night.

i guess this is me agreeing - its late at night - i’m alone - and i cannot thank you more for this song.

Via sometimes a great notion.

though i write them by the light of day, please read them by the light of the moon

I have been struggling with this “blogging” concept for a long time.  I have always been one to write down everything and make lists in an effort to structure my wants, likes and dislikes, and to-do items, but the idea of sharing that with anyone seemed far too vain. What I’ve learned as my “readership” has moved beyond my few staple music blogs is that I find solace in a lot of other people’s thoughts and opinions.  I am comforted when I see someone who shares my thoughts, feelings, or ideas.

I am not sure if my words will resonate with anyone, and even if they do, perhaps writing and reading blogs are both egotistical acts - i want to know that other people are like me and I want other people to see how they are like me.  Regardless, I am going to try.

We’ll see if this venture moves beyond a few posts, but my three favorite music blogs — I guess i’m floating, fuel/friends, and everybody cares everybody understands — have made a big difference in this decision, and in turn, a lot of what I write will center around music.  For the time being, this is not a traditional music blog, I will not be offering mp3s for download, but I definitely will be posting songs, links to other blogs, concert videos, and album reviews.  Amongst this music, I hope to share a profound thought or two, some mood-lifting videos, quotes, and some film review.

Hope someone sees this and starts reading. I’ll love you for it .

ALBUMS THAT DEFINED MY 2009

I know that separation sunday, for emma forever ago, time without consequences, and separation sunday aren’t 2009 albums but they make the cut because they didn’t come onto my radar until this past year.

looking back at the year - it was more about the bands who either recreated themselves or were new to me.  Although i’m happy with albums like Wilco (the album) and Big Whiskey — for the most part, the new albums released by my old favorites weren’t game changers.  If they had been the first thing I’d heard of those artists - I don’t know that I’d be the fan I am today because of older works like Yankee Hotel and Before These Crowded Streets.

a quick overview.

1. i can’t articulate what it is about for emma, forever ago. the name of the album moves me. it defines my pain and my love. it fills me up with emptiness. and the tone of justin vernon’s voice still makes me cry more than anything else.

2. i know these stories. you’re the one i want to see me for all the stupid shit i’ve done

3. honestly - my only reasoning. listen to orange sky. watch away we go.

4. i hated this band. and then i found how a resurrection really feels. and then i fell in love with their energy and learned to love craig finn’s voice. and all of a sudden, there was no turning back.

5. anonanimal. tenuousness. fitz and dizzyspells. he didn’t dissappoint. and i can say with zero reservations that if someone gave me this album before his earlier stuff, I would’ve become a fan even faster. i can also say that andrew bird is the most talented musician i have ever seen perform

6. the format: wrote the “song” from my relationship with the only man i’ve ever loved, played during almost every defining moment of high school, and broke up during my senior year of high school when everything was falling apart. fun. brings me hope - it didn’t end with nate and sam. yes i’m cheesy but this album makes me smile endlessly

7. like the andrew bird post - except I wasn’t even a gigantic fan before this album. now i can’t stop listening

8. she reminds me why i love being a woman. why its fun to be girly and dance and sing. this album blows the rest of her work out of the water.

9. too good. i would put bright eyes, conor oberst solo work, m. ward, and my morning jacket all in my top 25. hello heavenly.

I will be dying and so will you, and so will everyone here. That’s what I want to explore. We’re all hurtling towards death, yet here we are for the moment, alive. Each of us knowing we’re going to die, each of us secretly believing we won’t

i’m new to tumblr. i’ve also recently acquired a large quantity of new songs. i have been listening to the bowerbirds for a week now, but I still cannot fully grasp this music. or the fact that I only had one of their songs until last week.

i think we should all listen to our ipods/itunes/other sources of music on “shuffle” for awhile each day and then take note of which song surprises us.  the song that you aren’t expected to fit with the way everything felt in the moment you heard it or the song you’ve never heard and didn’t know you owned that absolutely floors you.

My conscience is an avalanche

majestic

bewildering

and holy and careless
